Privacy policy

This page explains which personal data the website www.beebeep.net and the BeeBEEP application collect, why, and what you can do about it, as the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires. In short: the site uses no cookies and no Google, and it keeps only totals per day, nothing that tells one person from another. The messages, files and calls you exchange with BeeBEEP stay in your network and never reach me.

Who is responsible

The data controller is Marco Mastroddi, the author of BeeBEEP and the owner of this site. You can write to him at marco.mastroddi (at) gmail.com.

The website

• Server logs. Like every website, the server that hosts this one (Aruba S.p.A., Italy) records every request: IP address, date and time, the page asked for and the browser used. These records are needed to deliver the pages and to protect the server from abuse (legitimate interest, article 6(1)(f) GDPR), and are deleted by the hosting provider after the time its own rules set.
• Statistics without cookies. The site counts by itself how many times each page is viewed, the name of the other site a visitor comes from (such as google.com), the country of each visit (explained below), the pages not found and the visits of search engine robots. It writes down only the totals of each day: no cookie, no identifier, and never your IP address. They tell me which pages are read, so that I can improve them (legitimate interest).
• No cookies. The site sets no cookies at all, so it needs no banner to ask for your consent. It has no forms, accounts, comments or newsletter.
• Bootstrap from jsDelivr. The pages load their stylesheet, script and icons (Bootstrap) from jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net), a public content delivery network: your browser contacts its servers, which receive your IP address and the details of your browser, as every web server does.
• Links to other sites. The downloads come from SourceForge (and from Snapcraft and eCSoft2), the donations go through PayPal: when you follow those links, the privacy policies of those sites apply. The news page shows the news of the project on SourceForge, downloaded by this server: your browser does not contact SourceForge to show them.

The BeeBEEP application

BeeBEEP has no accounts and no servers in between: text and voice messages, transferred files and desktop sharing always remain in your network, and reach other networks only through the VPNs you configure.

Apart from that, every version of BeeBEEP makes these requests to this site, which you always see in the BeeBEEP log:

• The check for a new version. At start, BeeBEEP asks https://www.beebeep.net/last_version.php which version is the latest, telling its own version (such as BeeBEEP 5.8.6). The site counts how many checks arrive each day for each version. You can turn it off in the menu Settings - On start - Check for new version.
• The check from the menu. When you choose ? - Check for new version..., BeeBEEP opens a page of this site in your browser, with its version and operating system in the address: the site counts it the same way, by version and system, in the totals of the day.

For each of these requests, and for each page of the site, the site also counts the country it comes from: it looks up the IP address in a table of address ranges kept on this server (IP Geolocation by DB-IP), adds one to the total of that country and forgets the address. No other service receives it.

BeeBEEP 5.8.6 and older versions

Once a day they send the daily usage to Google Universal Analytics, with a random identifier of the installation, as the FAQ explains: Google retired that service in 2024, and those data no longer reach me. You can turn it off: close BeeBEEP, set SendAnonymousUsageStatistics to false in the beebeep.ini file of your data folder, and start it again.

BeeBEEP 5.9.2

BeeBEEP sends nothing to Google. Once a day it tells https://www.beebeep.net/usage its version, the operating system, the language of your system and how many days ago it was installed. The site keeps only the totals of each day, and the age only in ranges (first day, first week, first month, first year, over a year). No identifier is sent and your IP address is not written down. It tells me how many people use BeeBEEP and which versions and systems are worth supporting (legitimate interest). You can turn it off the same way: SendAnonymousUsageStatistics set to false in beebeep.ini.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable format (articles 15 to 22 GDPR). Since the site and the application keep only totals, there are usually no data of yours to give back or delete; for anything else, write to the address above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian supervisory authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with its date. BeeBEEP 6 will have its own section here before it is released.
